Gouge is the largest employer in Mooroopna, a community with some significant challenges. Unemployment is well above the state average. Youth unemployment rates among the highest nationally.  

The Shepparton region is home to the largest Indigenous Australian population outside of Melbourne. Gouge is one of the founding signatories to the Algabonyah Aboriginal Employment Accord - a regional initiative designed to increase the percentage of indigenous people employed in the region.
